The Ontario Human Rights Commission is pleased to invite you to the Canadian Association of Statutory Human Rights Agencies (CASHRA) 2008 annual conference.
Where: Collective Strength: Commissions to Communities and Back will take place in Ontario’s scenic Niagara Region from June 15th to 17th, 2008 on the campus of Niagara College.
Who: CASHRA is the national association of Canada’s governmental human rights agencies responsible for the protection, promotion and fulfillment of human rights in Canada’s provinces and territories.
If you are part of a Community, which includes Community-Based Organizations, Non-Governmental Organizations, Students, Individuals or Businesses, then this conference is an important opportunity for you to voice your perspectives on Human Rights in the presence of other Communities and Chief Commissioners of Human Rights from across Canada.
Why: The conference will address ways in which Commissions and Communities can work together to develop a strong Human Rights culture in Canada. By identifying common goals and methods for cooperative exchange and action, the conference aims to lay a foundation for a more collaborative and interdependent approach to Human Rights.
Examining how Commissions and Communities might better interact with each other, and with the other organizations included in Canada’s human rights system, is key to advancing Human Rights at both the provincial and national level. Greater interdependence is important for achieving a society in which everyone is valued, treated with dignity and respect, and where we all accept responsibility for Human Rights.
How: There is no better way to understand and build on these interrelations than through tackling the big issues of our day including:
The Conference program will be divided into three components: (i) the work being done by Commissions, (ii) Human Rights from a Community perspective and (iii) the interrelationship between Commissions and Communities.
A participatory methodology is an integral feature of this year’s conference programming. To date extensive consultation has been conducted to developing a conference program that promotes mutual learning, capacity building, sustainable relationships and networks for future collaboration.
